A Brief History of Chartham Village Hall

For many years, the residents of Chartham used a building near St. Mary’s church as their village hall. However, in the 1970s, the hall was in need of major works and was eventually demolished and replaced with a house and two bungalows. This left the village without a community gathering place for over 20 years.

In 1995, the residents of Chartham received a promising contribution from the builders fund of £106,000 when Wilcon Homes built the St. Augustine estate. However, finding an adequate site for a new village hall proved difficult. The Chartham Mill social club had been closed for some time, so negotiations began to use the land for a new hall.

After securing over £140,000 from Wilcon Homes, a lottery grant, and fundraising efforts within the village, construction on a new village hall began. The hall was extended and parts of it were rebuilt to create a modern community gathering place. The management committee of the hall was formed after the transfer of the Trust Deed by the Parish Council to the Village Hall, and several councillors became trustees. The earliest minutes found of the committee are from 2008.

In recent years, changes have been made to the management of the Village Hall. The Parish Council removed it as an asset, and the car park was separated from the hall as property belonging to the council. The building insurance, which had previously been paid by the council, was stopped, forcing the Village Hall to have the building’s value assessed for insurance purposes. The assessment revealed a value of £1,500,000. It’s important to note that the Village Hall also owns the changing rooms attached to the hall.

Despite the challenges faced in the past, Chartham Village Hall remains a vital part of the community, providing a space for social events, meetings, classes, and more. The hall is managed by a dedicated team of volunteers who continue to uphold the spirit of community that has been present in Chartham for generations.
